The Awty School was founded in 1956 as a pre-school. The incorporation of an Upper School in 1975 changed the school into a college preparatory school which merged with the French School of Houston and became the Awty International School in 1984. With a total enrollment of over 1,100 students, Awty is currently the third largest private school in the city of Houston and the second largest international school in the United States.

Enrollment has increased from 400 to 1,100 over the last ten years. A new pre-school facility was completed in 1990, a new upper school science building in 1991, additional pre-school classrooms in 1995, and a new upper school building including a computer center, foreign language laboratories and a new library in 1996. Construction was completed on a new performing arts and athletic center. A new classroom wing opened in Fall 1999 and a new Lower School building opened in 2003.

Awty is accredited by ISAS, CIS and the French Ministry of Education, affiliated with the Mission Laique Française, and a member of NAIS. The academic program of the school prepares students for the French Baccalauréat or the IB, and offers an American diploma. All students take a second language - English, French or Spanish. There are native-language programs in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic and Dutch.

All faculty members hold degrees in their teaching fields and most hold advanced degrees. Most language teachers are native speakers of the languages.

The student body is composed of 30% American, 30% French with others representing 50 nationalities. Graduates attend universities in the US, Canada, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

The school day runs from 08:00 to 15:30. The school year runs mid-August to beginning-June, with holidays in October, November, December, February and April. Extra-curricular activities include inter-scholastic soccer, basketball, volleyball, track, golf and tennis; yearbook, science and computer clubs, and Model United Nations. Field trips include an annual camping expedition. An after-school program includes supervised study and activities. The school is located on a 15-acre campus in central Houston. Premises include 105 classrooms, four science laboratories, three art rooms, four computer laboratories, three libraries, a lunch room, two covered basketball/volleyball courts, two soccer fields and three gymnasiums.

US candidates for admission should submit transcripts, letters of recommendation and take the ERB examinations. Non-US students should submit school reports and letters of recommendation.
